  • Mount Baker, a 10,781 foot (3,286 meter) volcano located in Whatcom County, Washington state, takes on a pastel appearance through morning fog near Artist Point in the North Cascades. Mount Baker, which is part of the Cascade Range of mountains, has the second-most thermally active crater in the range, second only to Mount St. Helens. Baker's volcanic cone is relatively young, possibly less than 100,000 years old, even though the area where it sits has been volcanically active for 1.5 million years.

  • Several ring-billed and herring gulls fly over Dry Falls in Grant County, Washington, which at one time was believed to be the largest waterfall that ever existed. Geologists believe that during the last ice age, ice dams resulted in giant glacial lakes in eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana. When those dams failed, as they did dozens of times, glacial lakes Columbia and Missoula rapidly drained, creating a cataclysmic flood. During the floods, what is now Dry Falls was a spectacular waterfall, 400 feet high (121 meters), 3.5 miles wide (5.63 kilometers). Water may have raced over its massive cliffs at 65 miles an hour (105 km/hour), a flow that's estimated to be ten times as powerful as all the world's current rivers combined. California condors are New World vultures that went extinct in the wild in 1987. They have gradually been reintroduced to California's coastal mountains and parts of Utah, Arizona and Baja California. However, they remain one of the rarest birds.   • The Three Sisters, a cluster of three volcanic peaks in central Oregon, are bathed in alpenglow as the full moon sets into the Belt of Venus just before sunrise in this aerial view. The three peaks are the third-, fourth- and fifth-highest peaks in Oregon. Of the three, the South Sister, visible on the left, is the tallest with an elevation of 10,385 feet (3,157 meters) and is also known as Charity. The Middle Sister, also known as Hope, is the shortest with an elevation of 10,047 feet (3,062 meters). The North Sister, also known as Faith, is slightly taller at 10,085 feet (3,074 meters). The Three Sisters are unusual in that the volcanic peaks are in a dense cluster; volcanoes in the Cascade Range are typically spaced out with 40 to 60 miles (60 to 100 kilometers) of distance between them. Of the three peaks, only the South Sister is likely to become active again. The last eruption was 50 B.C. The Three Sisters are part of the Three Sisters Wilderness, Oregon's second-largest wilderness area.

  • A natural nighttime pillar of light known as the Zodiacal Light shines above and is reflected in Crater Lake, Oregon. The Zodiacal Light results from the sun shining on dust particles from old comets. The dust particles - the largest of which are believed to be just 0.3 mm and miles from its nearest neighboring particle - orbit the sun in a range from Mars to beyond Jupiter. Visible year-round in the tropics, the Zodiacal Light is best viewed immediately around the spring and fall solstice farther from the equator. The planet Venus, the brightest object in the sky, is visible near the peak of the Zodiacal Light and is also reflected in Crater Lake. The Milky Way, visible on the right, intersects with the Zodiacal Light at the top-center of the image. Crater Lake, which is actually a caldera, formed when Mount Mazama erupted violently about 7,700 years ago, causing its summit to collapse. Subsequent eruptions sealed the caldera, trapping rain water and snowmelt, forming the lake, which has a maximum depth of 1,949 feet (594 meters). Wizard Island, a volcanic cinder code, is visible in the foreground.

  • Thick fog covers a high mountain valley that reaches up to Mount Baker, a 10,781 foot (3,286 meter) volcano located in the North Cascades of Washington state. Valley fog, which is a type of radiation fog, can be incredible dense. It forms when air along ridgetops and mountain slopes cools after sunset. The air then becomes dense and sinks into the valley below where it continues to cool and becomes saturated, causing fog to form.

  • A sunflower star (Pycnopodia helianthoides) with 12 arms looks for food at the bottom of Puget Sound near Des Moines Beach, Des Moines, Washington. The sunflower star is the largest sea star in the world, and can grow to be more than 3 feet (1 meter) across with as many as 23 arms. They initially have only 6 arms when they are young, but grow more as they age.

The full waterfall is approximately 12 feet (3.5 meters) tall and 75 feet (23 meters) across. The White Salmon River is a tributary of the Columbia River, flowing 44 miles (71 kilometers) from the slopes of Mount Adams to the Columbia River gorge. Parts of the White Salmon River have been designated Wild and Scenic.

The Teton Range is the youngest mountain range in the Rocky Mountains, forming between 6 to 9 million years ago. The peaks are fault-block mountains, caused by tilting along the fault where they formed. Grand Teton, visible to the left of the moon, is 13,775 feet (4,199 meters) high. Grand Teton National Park contains another nine peaks that are at least 12,000 feet (3,658 meters) above sea level.

  • A natural nighttime pillar of light known as the Zodiacal Light shines above and is reflected in Crater Lake, Oregon. The Zodiacal Light results from the sun shining on dust particles left behind by comets. The dust particles - the largest of which are believed to be just 0.3 mm and miles from its nearest neighboring particle - orbit the sun in a range from Mars to beyond Jupiter. Visible year-round in the tropics, the Zodiacal Light is best viewed immediately around the spring and fall solstice farther from the equator. The planet Venus, the brightest object in the sky, is visible near the peak of the Zodiacal Light and is also reflected in Crater Lake. The Milky Way, visible on the right, intersects with the Zodiacal Light at the top-center of the image. Crater Lake, which is actually a caldera, formed when Mount Mazama erupted violently about 7,700 years ago, causing its summit to collapse. Subsequent eruptions sealed the caldera, trapping rain water and snowmelt, forming the lake, which has a maximum depth of 1,949 feet (594 meters). Wizard Island, a volcanic cinder code, is visible in the foreground.

  • Special properties in the bark of a Giant Sequoia tree (Sequoiadendron giganteum), center, protect the tree from damage that affects other trees. Chemical tannins in the bark and wood resist disease, rot, insects, and other causes of decay. Its thick, fibrous bark also provides insulation against fire. A tree that isn't similarly protected (left) is covered with moss. The Giant Sequoia's unique properties can help it live 3,000 years or more.

Giant Sequoias are the world's largest trees in terms of total volume, with the largest trees reaching 311 feet (95 meters) in height and more than 56 feet (17 meters) in diameter. The oldest Giant Sequoias are more than 3,000 years old. Sequoias are unique in that they can grow close together, sharing root systems, to get the water they need.

  • A Haleakala silversword plant (Argyroxiphium sandwicense macrocephalum) grows in the volcanic rock near the summit of Mount Haleakal? on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The plant, found only in Haleakala National Park, was once endangered and is still considered threatened. It grows more than a mile above sea level (2,100 to 3,000 m) in tough conditions. The skin and hairs are strong enough to resist the wind and freezing temperature of this altitude and protect the plant from dehydration and the sun.
